So I will start with one of my favourite subject areas...
CINEMA
Of all the current cinema releases, my number one slot goes to Bridesmaids! It really is hilarious, I cried with laughter, it is so original and I think quite relatable for a lot of Women; HOWEVER this does not mean it's a film just for girls, it is funny whatever your gender and I know at least two males who can vouch for this statement!
The leading lady of Bridesmaids Kristen Wigg is definitely one to watch; previous to this film I only knew her from Knocked up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, where she played equally funny but very minor characters. The most appealing thing about her character to me, is that she doesn't hold back in voicing her opinion (which is mostly offensive/inappropriate) and she does it with such a straight face. My second favourite film of the current releases is Senna. A complete contrast to Bridesmaids, it is a documentary film on the life and career of Brazilian Formula One racer Ayrton Senna. He was a very talented racing driver who won the F1 world championship three times and tragically died as a result of a crash whilst racing at the age of 34.
Whether you know or like Formula One racing or not, this film is a brilliant documentary about a passionate and talented man, who believed that if you are going to pursue something you should be the best at it. He once said;
'Being second is to be the first of the ones who lose.' (Ayrton, Senna)
He was an inspirational man who had good morals and I think this film would inspire anyone that, like him, can respect and '...admire work, dedication and competence.' (Ayrton, Senna)
A few thoughts on other films currently showing..
Transformers - Good, not bad, not great. There is more action than storyline (please note this is not the most reliable opinion of this film as I did fall asleep for about half an hour of the two and a half hour film!).
Bad Teacher - Bad Film (that's not in the good sense of the word bad, but the bad).
I would like to see Larry Crowne; I am dubious as to whether or not this film will be good however I will always give Tom Hanks my full attention in any film he stars in, he is my favourite actor.
They say you should never judge a book by its cover, but they don't say you shouldn't judge a film by its trailer so I will therefore NOT be going to see Mel Gibson and his hand puppet in The Beaver.
RETAIL
Some incredible savings to be had at the moment! Unbelievable discounts in most retailers.. One thing that does irritate me though is when a shop scrapes the barrel that is their stock room and put old sale stock out to fill up the floor. It's old sale stock for a reason, no one wanted it in the Winter sales no one wants in in the Summer sale!
I want to highlight COS as an amazing fashion retailer which in my opinion is relatively unknown and underrated by the masses. It is part of the H&M group, their range of stock is a lot more minimal than other high street stores, it has slightly higher price points than the likes of Topshop and H&M, but you pay for quality and styling; the fabrics are gorgeous the cuts are well thought out and it provides something a little less mainstream than the other high street retailers.
Having said it is generally more expensive there are basic tops starting from £18 and style wise they tend to have a bit more about them then basics tops from elsewhere. The store is inviting, its nicely spaced out, there is only one of each size, you don't feel overwhelmed by the volume of clothes and it definitely has an exclusive feel to the store. Go and have a look boys and girls!
I am in love with these KMix toasters and kettles by Kenwood, they come in a range of bright colours.. So much more exciting than silver!
THE LEMMING SYNDROME (LS)
One thing that really irritates me is the widespread case of the Lemming Syndrome (LS) amongst commuters, that seems to be sweeping the nation.
I'll set the scene for you.. It's peak time for travelling on public transport (more specifically trains), everybody wants to get to their destination in a timely fashion. There are large volumes of people. The train doors open. Do people wait patiently for everyone to get off the train and then wait for the people in front of them to get onto the train before they do so? APPARENTLY NOT! Lemming syndrome has kicked in and people will walk forward even if there is no space to walk into! Does this mean walking into the back of the person in front of you, when they have no where to go? YES! I remain one of the few people to have been unaffected by the lemming syndrome (if you exclude being a victim of LS) and I feel that the only way of diminishing it is to make it more widely known and see that it is recognised as a major problem amongst commuters.
